This morning I had a consultation with a GP about a prescription for a Viagra tablet that I had been prescribed for a while. In the study, participants took sildenafil (a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor) or a placebo tablet. After 24 hours, Viagra, Cialis or Levitra were found to significantly reduce symptoms of the following conditions:
The researchers concluded that Viagra and Cialis “may be potentially dangerous” and recommended that they be re-tested as well.
“It is important to note that Viagra and other ED drugs are not FDA-approved for use in women, and the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in women who have a history of impotence or have a history of erectile dysfunction should be thoroughly evaluated,” said Leven.
“Our findings suggest that sildenafil may pose a potential risk for women who are currently taking ED drugs to have a more serious and potentially dangerous side effect.”

However, other researchers also noted that sildenafil was associated with increased rates of sexual side effects, including erectile dysfunction, but the study did not look specifically at sexual side effects.
Viagra was also associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. However, the researchers noted that there was no evidence that Viagra was causing these problems.
“The authors should weigh the potential risks and benefits of Viagra against any potential harm they could expect from it,” said Leven.
